Dotting i’s

There are many ways to cross your t's, pic:

If you are a person who likes to dot the i’s and cross the t’s then people will be able to rely on you to pay close attention to details and take pride in getting them right.

Such people are meticulous and thorough and generally get it right.  It s also used to express that one want to make sure that everything is carefully considered in contexts like this:

“Before we send this document to the Board of Directors let’s make sure we dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s.”

This is a very useful expressiona dn perfectly appropriate in a business context.  In fact, it is probably most appropriate in a business context.

The origin most likely is just what one might think: school children being trained to write neatly and carefully.  Sloppiness or negligence would show itself in missing dots on i’s .
